Why is Vioxx prescribed?
Vioxx belongs to a class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Voixx is prescribed to treat arthritis, menstrual pain or other acute pain. Vioxx works by blocking the enzyme in your body that makes prostaglandins. Decreasing prostaglandins helps to reduce pain and swelling.

How do I use Vioxx?
You may take Vioxx generally once daily by mouth. This medication is best when taken with food, to decrease the chance of stomach upset. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Take Vioxx with 6 to 8 ounces (180-240ml) of water. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking this drug.

What are the potential side effects form Vioxx?
Some possible side effects can be stomach upset or tiredness. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Unlikely, but report promptly: severe headache, change in the amount of urine, mental/mood changes, stiff neck, dark urine, yellowing eyes or skin. If you notice any of the following unlikely but very serious side effects, stop taking Vioxx and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately: black stools, persistent stomach/ abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Vioxx?
Consult your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

If you have ever had allergies, liver problems, kidney problems, heart disease, stomach/intestinal ulcers or bleeding, history of smoking, alcoholism, asthma, high blood pressure, growths in the nose, serious infections, swelling, blood disorders, poorly controlled diabetes, dehydration. If you are planning to combine Vioxx with alcohol, this may increase your risk for stomach bleeding.
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, Vioxx should be used only when clearly needed during the first six months of pregnancy. It should not be used during the last three months of pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding, because there is a potential risk to the infant.

What is the recommended dose for Vioxx?

Treatment for Osteoarthritis: The normal dose is 12.5 milligrams once daily. The doctor may increase your dose to a maximum of 25 milligrams once daily if needed.
Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis: The standard dose is 25 milligrams once daily. Taking any more than this on a regular basis is not recommended.
Treatment for Acute Pain and Dysmenorrhea: The standard dose is 50 milligrams once daily as needed, for no more than 5 days. Its not recommended taking this much on a regular basis.

What should I do in case of an overdose with Vioxx?
If an overdose with Vioxx is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose with Vioxx may include: severe stomach pain, coffee ground-like vomit, dark stool, ringing in the ears, change in amount of urine, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, muscle weakness, slow or shallow breathing, confusion, severe headache or loss of consciousness.
